Center Valley, Pa. - For the third time in five years a Cadet will take home the Patriot League's top academic honor in the sport of golf, as Army sophomore Patrick Beverly was named the 2006 Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Beverly was one of 32 Patriot League student-athletes named to the 2006 Patriot League Golf Academic Honor Roll, announced Friday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich.
Beverly, an economics major from Humble, Texas, joins former Black Knights' teammate Scott Manley as the second-straight Cadet recipient of the Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Pete Mangold is the only other member of Army's golf program to be named Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002.
A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection in golf, Beverly posted a 3.59 grade point average (GPA) while assisting Army to its third-straight NCAA Golf Championships appearance. Beverly was also selected to the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Men's At-Large Second-Team as well as the 2006 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine University Division At-Large Academic All-District I First-Team.
On the links, Beverly turned in his second-straight eighth-place performance at the Patriot League Golf Championships in April, carding a 229.
Navy sophomore Chris Renninger recorded the highest GPA by a Patriot League golf student-athlete in 2006, as the chemistry major finished the spring semester with a 4.00 GPA. Bucknell placed the most student-athletes on the Patriot League Golf Academic Honor Roll with eight student-athletes - including sophomore Rahul Desai (accounting) and junior Patrick Yingling (management), both of whom posted the second-highest GPAs by golf student-athletes in 2006 with a 3.83.
